Driveway Culvert Size and Length in Kaufman County

In Kaufman County the driveway culvert size is not your call or the installer's: the precinct Commissioner sets the diameter on your permit. The length follows from how wide the drive is and how the ends are finished. Here is how both get decided, with the numbers worked out.

Who Sets Driveway Culvert Size and Length in Kaufman County

Kaufman County's culvert application (revision 02-2026) is direct about it: once the permit is filed and the fee paid, the precinct Commissioner contacts the property owner and "will determine standard appropriate size and diameter." The Commissioner knows how much water that stretch of road ditch carries in a storm, which a homeowner looking at a dry ditch in August does not.

That matters more here than in most of Texas. Kaufman County sits on Blackland Prairie clay with 60% or more clay content, and wet clay sheds rain instead of soaking it up, so road ditches run fast and full after a storm. A pipe one size too small backs water up over the drive and washes out the fill around it.

For most homes the answer is a 12 in pipe; ditches that drain more ground or sit in a low spot usually get 15 to 18 in. On a state highway (US-80, US-175 or a state FM road) TxDOT approves the size and design instead, under its access management rules.

Size is only half the spec. The county takes three pipe types in its right-of-way and states that no other materials will be accepted:

Smooth PVC, single-wall drain tile and salvaged tanks are out, however cheap they look at the farm store.

How Long a Driveway Culvert Has to Be

The county form asks for three numbers on the sketch: the width of the drive, the culvert length and the length of the safety end caps. The pipe has to pass under the full width of the drive and keep going until the fill on each side has sloped back down to the ditch, where the safety end caps finish it.

The sharper the side slope, the shorter the pipe; the flatter and safer the slope, the longer. TxDOT sets 6:1 or flatter on state highways: for every foot the drive sits above the ditch bottom, the slope runs 6 ft out at each end. The table works that rule through for common drive widths.

Drive width on topPipe length, 2 ft of fillPipe length, 3 ft of fill

16 ftabout 40 ftabout 52 ft
20 ftabout 44 ftabout 56 ft
24 ftabout 48 ftabout 60 ft

Fill = height of the finished drive above the ditch bottom at the pipe. Length = drive width + 6 ft per foot of fill at each end (TxDOT 6:1). County roads follow the end caps your precinct specifies.

Local residential driveway culverts are typically quoted at 20 to 40 ft of pipe, so a long 6:1 run on a state highway sits at or past the top of that range. Whatever the number, it goes on the permit sketch and the precinct can change it.

Drive Width Rules

A wider drive means a longer pipe, so settle the width before you file. On a state highway a private residential driveway can be no wider than 24 ft, plus the corner radii, and those radii have to be at least 15 ft where the drive meets the pavement. On county roads the precinct reviews the width you draw on the sketch along with everything else.

Depth and Bedding on Blackland Clay

The pipe sits on the ditch flowline so water enters and leaves at the ditch bottom: set it high and water ponds at the inlet, set it low and it silts shut. In Kaufman County clay, which swells when wet and cracks when dry, the pipe goes on a bed of crushed rock rather than straight on the clay, so it holds its grade as the ground moves. The Blackland clay drainage guide explains why.

Example project

A 16 ft drive across a county road ditch east of Kaufman

An example, not a job record: a new house on five acres off a county road, with a road ditch about 2 ft deep at the drive. The owner files the culvert application with the survey, deed and notarized consent and marks it residential. The precinct calls back and sets an 18 in pipe, larger than the 12 in the owner expected, because the ditch also carries runoff from a field across the road.

With a 16 ft drive and safety end caps the sketch shows about 30 ft of corrugated steel pipe. At roughly $20 to $60 per foot for corrugated metal pipe (LatestCost, September 2026), the pipe alone is about $600 to $1,800. Installed culvert jobs in Kaufman typically run $892 to $5,981 (HomeYou, August 2026), and the bigger pipe, bedding stone, fill and end caps push this one up from the bottom of that range.

What goes wrong: buying a 12 in pipe before the precinct calls, or building the drive wider than the sketch so the pipe ends sit in the fill.

Driveway Culvert Size: Frequently Asked Questions

What size culvert do I need for my driveway in Kaufman County?
The precinct Commissioner decides. Kaufman County's culvert application says the Commissioner will determine the standard appropriate size and diameter after your permit is filed and the fee is paid. Most residential driveways get a 12 in pipe, and drives crossing a bigger ditch or a low spot that carries more water get 15 to 18 in. Ask the precinct before you buy pipe, because a larger size than you planned changes the price.
How long should a driveway culvert be?
Long enough to run under the full width of the drive and out to the ends of the side slopes or safety end caps. That is why the county form asks for the drive width and the culvert length separately. Typical residential driveway culverts here are quoted at 20 to 40 ft, and a wide or tall crossing needs more. On a state highway, TxDOT's 6:1 end slopes make the pipe noticeably longer than the drive is wide.
How wide can my driveway be over the culvert?
On county roads the width you draw on the permit sketch is reviewed by the precinct. On a state highway TxDOT caps a private residential driveway at 24 ft wide, plus the corner radii where it meets the pavement, which must be at least 15 ft.
Can I use smooth PVC, single-wall plastic or a used tank as a culvert?
Not in the county right-of-way. Kaufman County accepts corrugated steel pipe, double-wall HDPE and concrete, and its form states that no other materials will be accepted. Concrete has to be set by a professional with precinct staff witnessing the install; double-wall HDPE is inspected by precinct staff for final approval.
Does a Kaufman County driveway culvert need headwalls or end caps?
The county requires safety end caps, and their length is a field on the permit sketch. On state highways TxDOT does not allow headwalls or other vertical ends at all; the ends are sloped 6:1 or flatter and protected with concrete riprap.
